For Students

Hi Students! We are happy to join you as you embark on your educational journey.

Here, we have gathered together a few facts to help you along your way.

Emergency Preparedness

CREATE A FAMILY EMERGENCY PLAN

"Make sure your family has a plan in case of an emergency. Before an emergency happens, sit down together and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go and what you will do in an emergency. Keep a copy of this plan in your emergency supply kit or another safe place where you can access it in the event of a disaster."

COMPLETE THE FAMILY COMMUNICATION PLAN

"Emergencies can happen at any time. Do you know how to get in touch with your family if you are not together" (Ready.gov)?

GATHER YOUR EMERGENCY SUPPLIES

Everyone should prepare a grab bag in the case of an emergency. You want to pack essentials such as food, water, medicines and other crucial supplies. Check out their Emergency Kit Checklist for Kids and gather all the listed materials to add to your grab bag.

About The World

How far away is space?

"We often think of space as being very far away. Planets are many millions or even billions of miles away, and stars are so far away that their distances are measured in light years. (A light year is the distance light travels in a year and is equal to six trillion miles.) Yet the edge of space – or the point where we consider spacecraft and astronauts to have entered space, known as the Von Karman Line – is only 62 miles (100 kilometers) above sea level" (NASA).

How hot is the sun?

"The hottest part of the Sun is its core, where temperatures top 27 million°F (15 million°C). The part of the Sun we call its surface – the photosphere – is a relatively cool 10,000° F (5,500°C). In one of the Sun’s biggest mysteries, the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona, gets hotter the farther it stretches from the surface. The corona reaches up to 3.5 million°F (2 million°C) – much, much hotter than the photosphere" (NASA).

When did the dinosaurs appear?

Watch the Dinosaurs 101 video from National Geographic.

When did Homo sapiens (humans) first appear?

"The beginning of the Homo sapiens lineage" was about ""550,000 to 750,000 Years Ago," however, fossils show Homo sapiens lived outside of Africa100,000 to 210,000 Years Ago" (Smithsonian).
