What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in America and is a celebration of African American life and culture. Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th (1865).

     It is one of the oldest African American holidays in the nation. As previously stated, Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery but it also memorializes the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation as well.

     The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order which attempted to free the enslaved peoples in the states of rebellion; also known as the Confederate states.

     The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was passed in 2021, making Juneteenth a national holiday and it is considered by many to be America’s second independence day; the first being America’s birthday on the 4th of July (1776)...."
